She saw past the stereotypes often associated with skateboarders and knew their skills were an opportunity to prove to the community youths were an important part of society.
The young officer began talking with the enthusiastic skaters and realised she wanted the community to understand more about them, just as much as the youths wanted to show the community.
“That’s when my brain started thinking that being at the Ballarat Police Pro-active Unit, that I had the perfect platform to create an event that not only would build positive relationships, but ensures that our youth are engaged and working towards something that they love and enjoy,” she said.
“You can hear the passion in their voices when they speak about their skating and it’s inspiring.”
Over the next few months Senior Constable Warke brainstormed her idea and the result was a one-day skate, scooter and BMX competition for the city's youths.
“I felt that it would be an opportunity to provide them with a platform to display their talents,” she said.
“In creating a community event, local residents can appreciate the skills they have.”
She said the free event would also give youths a chance to get more involved in their community.
“The aim is to encourage positive relationships between the police and youths, to bridge any gaps that exist and build relationships with the children in our community in the hope it works towards providing a safer community for everyone,” Senior Constable Warke said.
“It's positive from a policing perspective, because it engages them, keeps them focused on what they love and enables us to build a positive relationship because it’s where they are in their comfort zone.
“It allows us, as police, to see a different side to them that we perhaps wouldn't otherwise see.”
The event will be held at the Len T Frazer Reserve on April 8 between 10am-4pm. Registrations can be made on the day.
The event is open to the public with guest judges from the Australian Skateboarding Federation to decide on Ballarat's top young competitors who will go home with a trophy.
A free barbeque and giveaways will also take place throughout the day.
