The Rebels kicked 5.17 (47) to the Falcons 20.9 (129), however it was not all one-way traffic for the entire match. GWV trailed by just three points 18 minutes into the second quarter, before leaking three goals to end the half which preempted a ruthless third quarter from Geelong.
The Falcons kicked 9.1 to four behinds.
Coach Gerard FitzGerald said it was disappointing to not make the most of its chances while it struggled to curb the Falcons dominance in the third.
“We had opportunities to convert that would’ve given us the lead, we didn’t take our opportunities when we needed too and then we were unable to stem the flow when they got going,” FitzGerald said.
“We made some really good progress last week (in the practice game) and if we can play at our best for longer, we’ll continue to make progress.
“I just reminded them (after the game) that at the 18-minute mark of the second quarter we were within three points. So when we were playing at our best we were able to match it with a very good side.
“Our inability to control the tempo of the game and control Geelong’s flow of the ball in the third quarter – there were some key learnings there.”
Meanwhile, the Greater Western Victoria Rebels girls won every quarter against the Western Jets to record a comfortable 46-point victory, 11.7 (73) – 3.9 (27)
