Head of the like titleholder Loreto College shone on a promising opening day for Ballarat girls’ crews in the national school rowing championships in Sydney on Thursday.

Loreto took out one of three girls’ heats, while Damascus College, Ballarat Clarendon College and Ballarat Grammar School also progressed straight through to Saturday’s semi-finals with top four finishes.
Loreto led all the way to cover the 2000m in seven minutes, 50.15 seconds.
This gave it a comfortable 4.13 seconds over Loreto Kirribilli.
Damascus continued its rise through the ranks with a second, 5.87 seconds behind St Hilda’s (7:45.44) after working home strongly from fourth after 500m and third at the 1000m and 1500m.
Ballarat Clarendon College, which came from fifth at the 1500m, and Ballarat Grammar were third and fourth respectively in the third heat.
BCC and Ballarat High School were the best of the boys with a third and fourth respectively to go into semi-finals. All crews outside top fours contest repechages on Friday.
