A wildlife carer has urged residents to call a shelter if they stumble across injured animals after a young joey became stuck in fencing and was separated from its mum in Glenlyon at the weekend.

Two women helped free the animal from a fence near Suttons Lane on Saturday afternoon.
But Hepburn Wildlife Shelter manager Gayle Chappelle, who has years of experience caring for injured animals, said people should call a wildlife centre to help assess a kangaroo before it is released back into the wild.
“The most important thing you can do is get a kangaroo out of the fencing as quickly as you can,” she said.
“Then get a blanket over it and make sure it doesn’t flee, because they will likely have sustained leg injuries even if you can’t see any.
“They need to be properly assessed, and it can often take weeks for a wound to heal. The outcome for this roo is not great but unknown.”
