The Vikings came back in the second half after a scrappy start to defeat the fourth-placed Surf Coast 2-1 in Torquay on Saturday.
Sebastopol coach Corey Smith said the game had been a battle, with neither team able to settle for the entire 90 minutes.
After being one-nil down, the Vikings levelled the score by half-time with a goal from Kuanyjal Tuany at the 40th minute mark.
The Vikings took more chances in the second half and scored again in the 65th minute.
“I was confident that we were the slightly better side and deserved our win, but it could have easily gone either way,” Smith said.
“We just need to continue the momentum, we haven’t lost now since round three.
“Our performance needs to rise every game and we need to work hard in training, and then the results tend to take care of themselves if we do the right things.”
Among the best for the Vikings was captain Marcus Lynch, with Smith calling it his best game of the year.
Smith said Matthew Jamieson was strong in the midfield, quelling the influence of one of Surf Coast’s key players.
Point Cook lost its game against North Melbourne 2-1 to leave first position open for the taking.
