Skipton Street’s Globe Hotel was demolished early Sunday to make way for a 24-hour service station and fast food chain.
The Sebastopol pub and bottle shop on the corner of Rubicon and Skipton Streets closed in 2015 and has been vacant since.
The site will be redeveloped as a Hungry Jacks and BP Service Station.
The redevelopment was approved by City of Ballarat earlier this year. Permits were issued to developer Bently Property Group in May.
South ward councillor Des Hudson said he hoped the development would encourage store holders into the vacant shops opposite.
“It’s the changing face of the Sebastopol area. Whilst the Globe Hotel has been an iconic location of Sebastopol and many people will have fond memories but … that really busy site can now be transformed, offering employment for young people especially, it just brings that sense of vibrancy.”
The Hungry Jacks will feature a drive through with two order points and 34 internal seats. The 3176 square metre site is made up of four separate lots, three mixed use and one Residential Zone 1.
