The novel deals with main character Beth’s experiences with love won Ms Flynn an XO Romance prize.
As a teacher of creative writing at Federation University, Ms Flynn said she writes a lot of personal narratives and opinion pieces and naturally heads toward romance as escapism from non-fiction writing.
The choice of portraying the main character of the book with hypochondria was a personal one as Ms Flynn suffers from illness anxiety and wanted to weave that into the book.
XO Romance is a new imprint and the $5000 prize and publishing contract was set up to find their first author.
Ms Flynn encouraged other authors to enter the XO Romance prize which is open for submissions now.
