The move will have him linking up with Rebels teammate Flynn Appleby, who was recruited by the Magpies in the AFL rookie draft.
Wellings, 19, from Trentham had three seasons with the Rebels – the third as an over-age player when appointed captain.
The midfielder attended the past two state AFL combines, but missed out of being picked up in either national or rookie drafts.
Wellings made four VFL appearances with the North Ballarat Roosters last season.
MEANWHILE, Ballarat will host one VFL women’s home and away game next year.
Western Bulldogs will have a home game against Geelong at Mars Stadium in round eight on Sunday, July 1.
AFL Victoria indicated at the time it announced the North Ballarat Roosters would not be granted a VFL licence for 2018 that Ballarat would be allocated either VFL or VFL women's fixtures next season.
