The mobile forward is joining the Wimmera Football League’s newest club, the Hopetoun-Beulah based Southern Mallee Giants.
O’Farrell was the Swans’ most prolific avenue to goal last season.
He finished fifth in the BFL goalkicking with 44 in 15 appearances – playing the role of an opportunist small forward in which he used his goal sense to full advantage.
Swans football manager Mark Verberne said O’Farrell was living and working out of town, and would also be travelling overseas early in the year.
He said as an experienced player with close to 100 senior games for Ballarat, O’Farrell understood the level of commitment required in the BFL.
Verberne said O’Farrell would not have been able to meet the training requirements if he had stayed of for this season.
He said he would be surprised of O’Farrell did not return to the Swans at some stage.
Former North Ballarat Rebel and Rooster Josh Webster is also lining up with the Giants.
Webster co-captained the Rebels in the TAC Cup in 2014 and was also a Rebels best and fairest.
He had the BFL’s Redan as his home club for the past two seasons – playing just the three games for the Lions.
