The month of March marks the 80th anniversary of lovebirds, silent film star, Claire Mackinnion, and district farmer, Donald “Scobie” Mackinnon, first stepping foot onto their Mooramong estate home in Skipton.
The couple, who moved into the estate in 1938, were legendary for their pool parties, hosted in their pool hand dug by 16-18 men, and for introducing the idea of “cocktail hour”.
They were also known for their generosity to numerous causes, and charities, and their work during the war.
The couple, having no children, gave ownership of the property to the National Trust so that their generosity to the world would continue after their passing.
The MacKinnions modernised the victorian era homestead into the art deco wonder that it still is today, pulling inspiration at the time from contemporary Hollywood.
The pool party, organised by The National Trust, is an opportunity to celebrate the art deco homestead, and the legendary lives of the Mackinnions who resided there.
Visitors on the day will be able to explore the Mooramong estate, still filled with the Mackinnion couple’s furniture and personal effects in their original places.
The tour will also include hearing snippets from the love story of the famous couple and their life spent living on the homestead.
Access to the pool will be a definite highlight for adults and kids alike who are invited to bring their bathers, towels and picnics to enjoy spending the day poolside.
The National Trust has recently given the famous pool a complete refurbishment.
It is a perfect opportunity for everyone young and old to enjoy the end of the summer season.
Amie Brûlée and her swinging band will perform live music, from the 1930’s to 1950’s era, for the event.
A pop-up bar will be provided on the day by Taltarni winery, and treats from Ballarat’s Le Petit Patisserie will be available to purchase.
Guests are invited to come dressed in their best outfits inspired by the 1930’s to 1950’s floral style.
Best dressed competitions will be running through the day, including for the best cozzies and summer hats on the day, both period and contemporary.
The event is held for guests to enjoy the “living museum” that is Mooramong, as they wander through the grounds which are usually closed off to the public, and discover the history of the property.
The event will be held this Saturday, starting at 12pm and running until 4pm.
The Mooramong estate can be found at 635 Mooramong Road in Skipton.
Tickets for the event are priced at $35 per adult and $12 per child and can be pre-purchased online.
