Those are the words of grade three St Alipius Primary School pupil Bianca Delcey.
She worked with around 80 fellow grade three and four pupils to clean up at Mckenzie Reserve in Ballarat East as part of Schools Clean Up Day on Friday.
St Alipius was one of many schools across Ballarat to join the nationwide effort to clean up parks, streets and waterways.
“Rubbish is really fun to pick up but it is bad for the environment because people just throw it on the ground without thinking about it,” grade three pupil Sophie Davis said.
St Alipius Primary School science and sustainability coordinator Dan Pollard said pupils had been learning about the environment and the damage caused by litter during school classes.
“We have talked a lot about it and the kids have really got on board. It is also about making a statement that we care,” he said.
“From picking up rubbish today, the next time they see litter they may pick it up and they certainly won’t be throwing it around.”
Community members can participate in rubbish collections around Ballarat as part of Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday.
Over 20 clean up sites in Ballarat are registered on the Clean Up Australia Day website.
