SEMI-FINAL
at Alfredton
Saturday and Sunday
There appears little between Wendouree and Mt Clear heading into the weekend’s Ballarat Cricket Association first grade semi-final in Alfredton.
The Red Caps and Mounties have been great rivals in recent years and the 2017-18 ledger is square at one win apiece.
Wendouree won the battle on a hard pitch under two-day conditions back in round two before Mt Clear got the result on the turf in a one-dayer in round four.
The Mounties hit this semi-final on the back of a round 12 win over Napoleons-Sebastopol where the team posted a whopping 6-389 before rolling its rivals for 147.
Steve Nicholson was the hero on that occasion, making a fine 174.
The Red Caps, meanwhile, had the bye and haven’t played competitive cricket since February 17.
Wendouree captain Gavin Webb said his side’s best cricket would put it in a winning position at some point in the match, but said this also applied to his rivals.
Webb’s counterpart, Mt Clear skipper Darcy Thomson, said he was confident given his batsmen were in great form and that his bowlers could produce honest, disciplined lines for long periods of time.
Wendouree is the reigning premiers, while Mt Clear was beaten in the semi-finals last year by Darley.
The Mounties won the statewide Regional Big Bash title at the MCG during February.
