FOR MORE than five decades, antique dealers everywhere have tried to keep up with Ballarat's Joneses.Like the items it sells, there is a long story behind Ballarat's CV Jones Antiques and Art Gallery.Founder Charlie Jones first plied his trade from the Mining Exchange Building in Lydiard St in the early 1950s.The business moved to its present site at Armstrong St North in 1956 and Mr Jones soon became a legend among antique dealers across Australia."Anywhere in Australia he was known. Especially in furniture _ he'd buy the best. He had the courage to buy good things," auctioneer Phil Caldwell said. He died in September 2001, but the business carried on under the watch of his son Ross and grandson Craig Jones. Now, more than half a century after it first opened its doors, CV Jones is headed in a new direction. From 11am on Sunday, the store's entire stock, a total of 900 lots, will be auctioned. Up to 1000 bidders from across Australia and even New Zealand are expected to attend. The Joneses hope to clear the decks for renovations. After that, they will hold two auctions per year. Ross Jones admitted to some anxious moments ahead of the big day on Sunday."The other day I thought `what are we doing?' But I think Charlie would be happy with (it)," he said. "We've had a go and we wanted to stay here in Ballarat for another 50 years. And for Craig, this is his future."
