Each artwork created is close to its creator’s heart, but one particular piece is closer than most to Stephanie Reggardo’s and she’s hoping it can make a difference in the world.

Her watercolour, pencil and fineliner creation Epileptic Vision will be part of the Art for Epilepsy auction, a major fundraiser for support group Epilepsy Action Australia.
Ms Reggardo, who is in her final year of a Bachelor of Visual Arts at Federation University, experienced her first seizure at 16.
“This piece is based on personal experience of epilepsy,” Ms Reggardo said. “One of the first things people point out about it is the use of a jellyfish, which is a common theme for me because it has a lot to do with my epilepsy.
“I have juvenile myoclonic epilepsy and the jerks and twitches that I experience are like shocks. Imagine being jolted by electricity but without the zapping. It’s that muscle/nerve reaction that I associate with a jellyfish sting.”
The idea of Epileptic Vision arises because some people experience hallucinations with epilepsy, or even the medications to control it. In her case she thought she felt hands on her throat as she was starting a seizure.
After Ms Reggardo finishes her art course this year she hopes to study teaching.
“As much as I want to be a freelance artist, it’s not realistic, but I like helping people, especially younger people, learn their passion and I can do that as a high school teacher.”
This is the third year that Epilepsy Action Australia has held its Art for Epilepsy auction, with scores of artists donating works to be sold online. The only condition of entry is that artists must include the colour purple, which is the internationally recognised colour for epilepsy awareness.
Donated pieces come a variety of visual art disciplines including intricate illustrations, detailed portraits, enormous abstracts, eye-catching photography and digital art.
Prices start from $50 up to thousands of dollars, with the online auction open throughout May at www.ArtForEpilepsy.com.au
