Last year Darryl Floyd set up a gofundme page to raise $100,000 to help in his search of a disused mine near Avoca, strongly believed to resting place of his brother.
On June 28 it will be 43 years since Terry Floyd disappeared from the intersection of the Sunraysia and Pyrenees highways. It is believed Terry, then aged 12, was murdered and dumped down the Morning Star Mine at Bung Bong Hill.
Since Mr Floyd’s search of the mine began almost a decade ago, he has spent tens of thousands of dollars of his own money funding excavation works. The state government has also funded part of the search.
“Over the past seven years I have been painstakingly searching for my brother's remains ... that I was led to from the evidence provided in a coronial inquest in 2001.
“It has been a long and gruelling search, but the find of a sterling silver chain 140 feet down the shaft, makes me even more determined. Because on that fateful day Terry was wearing a sterling silver necklace,” he said.
Leather shoes the same style and size worn by Terry, copper buttons and press studs and part of boy’s underwear, also believed to be worn by the 12-year-old Maryborough boy, have been found down the mine.
Mr Floyd is now calling on the community to help further fund the search by donating to the gofundme page.
“A disused mine shaft cannot be (Terry’s) final resting place. He deserves to be buried with dignity and my family deserves the simplest of human needs, a place to go and visit our beloved brother,” Mr Floyd said.
