BALLARAT City Brewers get out of jail, Lara regains top spot and Geelong Guild is still in with a show for a top two finish. That was the wash-up from the latest round of Geelong Baseball Association A grade competition.Scott Malthouse threw a superb six innings for Deakin, but it was not quite enough to hold off the fast finishing Brewers on the weekend.Evergreen Brewer Peter Jacobsson took the 5-4 win for the Ballarat side, which trailed 4-1 going into the bottom of the seventh innings.Such was the Malthouse's dominance, it took the Brewers until the fourth innings to land a runner on base.Deakin scored in the first inning after a pair of hits by pitched balls by ever reliable Rory Meddick and a delayed steal that allowed the run across the plate.Deakin stretched its lead to 2-0 in the top of the sixth innings, and although the Brewers came back as Ned Balswin singled to score Anthony Clack in the equaliser, the Blues were on decent terms themselves after driving in another two runs. But as Meddick had been relieved after a decent stint, so too was a tiring Malthouse, replaced by brother Troy, who landed himself in trouble in the bottom of the seventh innings. He conceded a couple of bases-on-balls and allowed four safe hits to give the Brewers three runs to tie up the game.Big Peter Jacobsson was well into his work in the eighth innings, retiring the Deakin batters in order and then drawing a base-on-balls in the bottom of the innings.A pinch runner was called with one out, Scott Kerr walked and then Brett Bennetts delivered the "coup de grace" with a single to the rightfield alley for the winning run and a 5-4 victory.Brett Bennetts and Anthony Clack were the best with the bat for the Brewers.Still not certain of a top two finish, the Brewers are away this Saturday to league-leaders Lara, in a game that looms as one of the most important for some time.OTHER RESULTSA Reserve: Deakin 16 d Ballarat City Brewers 2.B grade: Mounties 10 d Colac 3.B Reserve: Colac 5 d Mounties 0.C grade: Ballarat City Brewers 10 tied with Corio 10.
