The university plans to upgrade exercise physiology, exercise rehabilitation, strength and conditioning facilities and equipment at the Mount Helen Campus.
Building works will improve the community gym, sports hall, and anatomy and physiology areas.
Federation University head of exercise and health sciences Deborah Pascoe said the upgrades would allow students access to state of the art and high quality research facilities.
“It means sport and exercise science, sport management, clinical exercise physiology and strength and conditioning students will be able to do practical application of all they are learning right throughout the year in this new facility,” she said.
“We are going to allow public access to the community gym and rehabilitation centre, so students will be working with the public and will be applying their knowledge straight up within the facility.
“We have got a high demand from the public at the moment for that kind of facility and service.”
The upgraded facility will boost sport science research at Federation University which already has a world-class reputation, with the Australian Centre for Research into Injury in Sport and its Prevention based in Ballarat.
It is one of 10 centres worldwide recognised by the International Olympic Committee as a research centre for the prevention of injury and protection of athlete health.
The facility is also hoped to attract elite athletes to provide an opportunity for high level athletic testing to researchers and students.
“It will be a more welcoming community and student based facility where it is comfortable to be in as well as promoting exercise and healthy lifestyle,” Ms Pascoe said.
Students can see and experience exercise physiology and rehabilitation first hand on campus which is a huge bonus.

“It also allows staff to be able to supervise students in an inviting environment.”
The concept designs were presented to Prince Edward during his visit to Federation University’s Mount Helen campus on April 8.
Stage one of the refurbishment is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2018, and the additional stage in 2019.
