Earlier this month, the shelter put out a call for residents to come and adopt a new friend with adoption fees at half price.
More than 200 cats and kittens were in the ageing premises, but the majority have now found homes.
Ballarat Mayor Samantha McIntosh said each cat adopted from the shelter is de-sexed, microchipped, vaccinated, flea and worm treated and registered for a year within the Ballarat municipality.
“The City of Ballarat Animal Shelter has adopted out 142 cats this month,” Cr McIntosh said.
“The number of cats has now been heavily reduced, but the shelter is still taking in new stray cats and surrenders daily.
“The shelter still currently has 73 cats and kittens up for adoption and will continue to push for them to find new homes.” Cats are available to adopt from the shelter for $100 until the end of May.
