Health check for our celebrities at Medi Marathon launch

HEALTH, fitness and supporting a worthy cause are all aims of this year's St John of God Hospital Medi Marathon. The event was launched at St John of God Hospital yesterday where organisers and sponsors spoke about the benefits the event would bring to the community when it is held on September 19 at Lake Wendouree.The Courier has joined the event this year as its presentation sponsor.Click here to register online for this year's Medi MarathonNow in its forth year, the event aims to encourage healthy lifestyle choices within the Ballarat community. It will cater to people of all fitness levels by offering a variety of events ranging from a 3km walk with mayor Judy Verlin through the Botanical Gardens to a 21km half marathon."This Medi Marathon is all about fun, fitness and enjoying life," Cr Verlin said. "It's an example of the way St John of God Hospital is providing services to the wider community while still encouraging healthy lifestyles."Proceeds will go towards Raphael House, a St John of God Hospital initiative to support women and families experiencing perinatal depression. In a first for the event, six Ballarat identities will undertake an eight-week exercise program leading up to the marathon to show their support. Taking part in the Celebrity Health Challenge are St John of God Hospital chief executive officer, John Fogarty; Cr Verlin; The Courier editor Angela Carey; WIN News presenter Bruce Roberts; Power FM presenter Matt Argoon; and 3BA Ballarat presenter Leigh Ryan. As a major sponsor of the event, The Courier will provide weekly updates on the progress of each identity taking part in the challenge.Mr Argoon said he was determined to set an example for others by taking part in the 21km run. "I'm looking to showing people they can turn it around and live a healthy lifestyle."
