The vigil will be held at the Queen Alexandra Bandstand on Sturt Street and has been co-ordinated by Ballarat-based not-for-profit charity Twin Hearts.
Twin Hearts President Kelly-Louise Warner said she and other women were moved to pay tribute to the 22-year-old who lost her life in a Carlton park while walking home last week.
“This event is for women who refuse to accept victim blaming and the limits society places on us, and the men who stand alongside us,” Ms Warner said.
“I think the reason it hits home for myself is that it could have been any of us.
“We’ve all walked home. We’ve all been there. Everyone should be able to walk home from work safely.
“A number of women I talk to don’t feel safe, even in Ballarat, so we need to do what we can to stand together.”
Ms Warner said the Twin Hearts Foundation was set up as predominantly a fundraising foundation focusing on sustainable projects with a particular focus on women and children.
“However, we are also a group of like-minded, passionate individuals who care deeply for our community, our state, our country and our world who have pledged to make a difference, and this is an issue that hurts our hearts,” she said.
“This is obviously an issue that is very close to all of us. We’d heard about a couple of other vigils that were going on in the state and thought this would be a terrific thing to do.”
She said half of the Twin Hearts fundraising efforts go to local charities, while the other half went to sister charities in Tanzania.
Ms Warner said the vigil would be an opportunity for people to speak should they wish or simply pay their respects.
She said candles will be available on the night, or people in attendance could bring their own.
The body of Ms Dixon was found in Princes Park, Carlton North just a few hundred metres from her home. A 19-year-old Broadmeadows man has since been charged with her rape and murder.
The vigil will be held at the Queen Alexandra Bandstand on Sturt Street on Monday, from 6pm.
