Four crews from Ballarat and Lucas were on the scene at the property near the corner of Drummond Street after a shed caught fire about 11.55am.
Ballarat City Senior station officer Shane Phillips said the fire was brought under control within 10 minutes of firefighters arriving.
“We’ll be on the scene for quite some time while the investigations continue,” he said.
“We were able to contain the spread of the fire and it did not go into any other properties. Obviously, we have a school at the back, so we’re pleased we were able to stop it spreading.”
Tenant Callan Ward said the shed contained barbecue and camping equipment and was also home to their two dogs.
He said his partner who was home at the time raised the alarm after hearing popping. He said she was a bit shaken up by the incident.
“There’s gas bottles, but that’s about it, it was a makeshift dog kennel,” Mr Ward said.
“There’s no home and contents insurance unfortunately, but everything’s replaceable.
“No-one-’s hurt and the dogs are fine so that’s the main thing. I’m glad everyone got out alright.”
Dana Street was expected to remain blocked to traffic for some time.
