BALLARAT politician Jaala Pulford has vowed to tweet-on despite the newly elected government speaker announcing a crackdown on social networking sites in Parliament.Liberal Ken Smith was elected speaker on Wednesday and said he was concerned about the amount of time politicians were wasting on sites such as Twitter and Facebook during Parliament sittings. The 65-year-old said they should be concentrating on the debates instead of updating their statuses. But Ms Pulford, the Member for Western Victoria and a self-confessed Twitter fan, said the tool helped her to connect with residents in her electorate, as well as following what her political opponents were doing."It takes about five seconds to send a tweet and that can be done while doing other things ... it's kind of a strange thing for Mr Smith to say considering the other distractions that go in the chambers, with members coming and going," Ms Pulford said."Also, parliament can sit from 9.30am to 10.30pm, I'm too Twitter-addicted to go 13 hours without a tweet."Ms Pulford has about 280 followers on her Twitter page, @JaalaPulford, and said while it might not be for everyone, she found it a quick and effective way to voice a concern, ask for feedback or alternatively for people to contact her."Why you would discourage people from talking to people about issues in real-time is a mystery to me," she said."People like their elected representatives to be accessible, and there's a whole range of different ways we can be accessible, but when parliament sits it's particularly difficult for country MPs as we're a long way from our electorate."
