The dress, which she created as part of her VCE textiles studies at Ballarat High School, beat 79 other student exhibits to take home the 2018 Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) Board Appreciation Award after being exhibited at Melbourne Museum.
“It felt weird seeing Phar Lap in one room, and then my work in the next,” she said.
Holly’s dress, which took about 100 hours to make, was influenced by global sustainability practices and eco-design. Wool, jute and cotton was formed in to cords then dyed using bark from a gum tree.
“I wanted to do something that could be amazing but still economical and something that promoted sustainability,” she said.
Holly said it was surreal to have received the award out of such a strong field.
“Academically as well as artistically it was really exciting because it’s such a prestigious exhibition in Victoria,” she said.
