The move is part of a community initiative with Transport Accident Commision’s Towards Zero campaign, in a bid for a future free of death and serious injuries on Victorian roads.
All A-grade netballers will be kitted out in Towards Zero socks.
This comes as all 22 Western Bulldogs players wear zero on the back of their guernseys for their pre-match run on the ground in their AFL clash against Port Adelaide at Mars Stadium on Sunday.
AFL Goldfields general manager Rod Ward said this was a vital campaign for the region to support.
"We have many players, volunteers and families associated with our various competitions that regularly travel on country roads,” Mr Ward said. “We think the message Towards Zero is an important to encourage our members to follow so that they can reach their destinations safely.”
It is a message echoed by Western Bulldogs chief executive officer Ameet Bains who said many club supporters and fans would travel to Ballarat for the match.
“Football clubs are privileged to have a platform to advocate from on important community issues, and we are determined to support this critical road safety message,” Mr Bains said.
People driving on country roads are four times as likely to be killed than those in metropolitan areas in Victoria, according to the TAC. Almost a quarter of serious injuries occur on high speed rural roads.
The Towards Zero plan includes $340 million allocated for infrastructure improvements on high-speed rural roads, including 2000 kilometres of safety barriers.
