Twenty six vendors from vineyards and cellar doors throughout the Grampians and Pyrenees showcased top-shelf reds from shiraz and cabernet to nebbiolo and grenache.
Event organiser Nancy Panter and winemaker partner, Adam Louder showcased their Sub Rosa handmade microwinery range. The couple launched Sub Rosa in 2015 and have just recorded high scores with Hallidays for their Nebbiolo and Shiraz.
“The event represents the Grampians and the Pyrenees wineries and they know how important it is to bring the regions to the city. Not all wineries have cellar doors, so it is also giving consumers a chance to sample wineries that are not usually open to the public,” Ms Panter said.
“The two regions start 30 to 45 minutes drive out of Ballarat … they are just on the doorstep.”
Clarnette Ludvigsen winemaker, Leigh Clarnette was a former Red Series event director and said about five per cent of visitors come from Melbourne and the regions, and many are local.
Winemaker Sasha Fair, from the long-established Sally’s Paddock vineyard near Avoca, had their shiraz, cabernet savignon and the Sally’s Paddock Signature Blend on offer.
“People are getting a little tired of having to choose a wine they don’t know anything about.”
“These days it is more about connecting with the producer and knowing where the wine comes from. It’s a really nice shift in focus,” she said.
