A new headspace workshop aims to give youth a safe space to explore and bring to life their ideas at tackling an issue they feel passionate about.
headspace Ballarat, a community chapter of the national youth mental health body, is teaming with Ballarat strategic and futures thinkers Forsight Lane.
The plan and design workshops, starting in mid-August, focuses on equipping potential entrepreneurs with the skills to test, refine and pitch their ideas in a safe space.
The plan and design concept adds to headspace Ballarat’s proactive short-course programs, like barbershop-based Arms and Armour for young men to explore what it means to be a modern male (now in its second year) and Revolution Wellness, a self-care group for young women. Both worked closely with Ballarat experts and services.
headspace chief executive officer Jason Trethowan, who hails from Ballarat, told The Courier last week he has been particularly proud of the initiatives produced by the Ballarat and Horsham headspace bases – both were in his patch for his former role with Western Victoria Primary Health Network.
Mr Trethowan has led headspace nationally for about 18 months.
He spoke with The Courier ahead of the national headcoach launch, a new campaign encouraging young men to train their minds and learn skills and habits to promote good mental health, just like they would train physically for sport.
headspace Ballarat chairman John FitzGibbon made clear when he took on the role earlier this year, headspace Ballarat would continue to grow as a holistic one-stop shop for all Ballarat youth, not just clients. This includes walk-up classes like yoga and life skills.
Services range from general practitioners and counselling to employment aid but extra non-client programs help young people feel comfortable should they wish to seek formal support.
The plan and design workshop is for Ballarat emerging leaders aged 12 to 25. Participants are required to attend all four sessions to work through the process of forming and promoting their projects. More details, phone headspace: 5304 4777 or headspace Ballarat on Facebook.
