DUAL Stawell Gift finalist Kevin Brittain says he can go one better at this weekend’s Ballarat Gift, 120m.The Geelong-based Brittain, who studies at the University of Ballarat, finished second to hometown champion Peter O’Dwyer last year, but is confident of an improved performance after reaching a second-straight Stawell Gift final.Despite finishing last on Tuesday, Brittain was upbeat about his prospects in the $30,000 Ballarat sequel at Eureka Stadium.“I’m in better shape than last year, and I’m moving the focus to the weekend,” Brittain said, moments after the Stawell final.“The other five that beat me in the final haven’t entered (Ballarat), but that may change through the week. If you look at the times, I’ll be the leading runner at the moment.”All six 2010 Stawell Gift finalists returned to contest the Ballarat Gift last year.Four – Brittain, Josh Tiu, Dale Woodhams and Stawell winner Tom Burbidge – reached the Ballarat final.Newly crowned champion Mitch Williams has already been ruled out of vying for the Victorian Athletic League double after tearing his hamstring in a dramatic finish at Central Park on Tuesday.Heats and entrants for this weekend’s Ballarat Gift are yet to be confirmed.Brittain, who won the men’s open 100m title at the Victorian Country Athletics Championships earlier this year, has been relatively quiet on the VAL circuit this season, with a victory in the 120m invitational at Burramine his best result.“The focus will really be the Ballarat Gift ... I went to Stawell for a bit of a pre hit-out to (Ballarat) in a way,” Brittain said.“(Ballarat) is like a second hometown to me, and after running second last year it would be good to hopefully go one better this year – which is the goal.”Brittain will run off 6.25m in the Ballarat Gift, a metre less than he had at Stawell. Ballarat Gift heats are run on Saturday at 2.50pm with the women’s heats at 2.10pm.Semi-finals for both events will kick off at 12.30pm on Sunday, with the women’s gift final at 2.50pm leading into the marquee final at 3pm.
