A stray possum is believed to have caused a mass power outage throughout Ballarat in the early hours of the morning.

More than 20,000 homes were briefly without power about 3.30am today, as much of the city turned dark.

The source of the outage was traced back to Sutton Street in Delacombe.

It was initially estimated the power would be restored by 7am, but eventually it was restored much sooner.

Residents in almost all aspects of Ballarat were affected, but it even spread as far as Linton, Smythesdale and Ross Creek to the south-west of Ballarat.
