A FASTER, more efficient Western Jets outfit broke free of North Ballarat Rebels for a five-goal win at Eureka Stadium yesterday. The Jets, only three points up at half-time, piled on seven goals to the Rebels’ in the third quarter for the buffer they needed in the TAC Cup under-18 battle.North Ballarat coach David Loader said uncharacteristic play crept into the Rebels game, which the Jets quickly exposed.“A lot of our players had big workloads coming into this match and unfortunately weren’t up to it,” Loader said.“The Jets came to play and put in a better show at the contested footy.“They are a very quick side and able to create goals very quickly.”The Jets scored the opening goal before three unanswered goals to the Rebels set up a 10-point lead by quarter-time.Play became a scoreless deadlock for the second half of the second quarter after the Jets had edged ahead. The Rebels were forced to work hard for each goal while the Jets seemed to take off in effortless bursts.Onballer Coleman Schache was relentless in his efforts across the ground in a best on ground performance for the Rebels.Rover Andrew McMeel also worked hard in the Rebels’ engine room.Forward Sam Dobson presented strong up forward and chalked up two goals.Dobson sorely lacked supply.Loader said a few players tried hard but there was not many winners for the Rebels. An in-form Jets entered the match on four consecutive wins and looked hungry for their fifth.Jets’ midfield-forward Jack Charleston and wingman Will Hoskin-Elliott led the visitors charge. The match was a stand-alone round, wedged between two TAC Cup development weekends.Rebels players have a fortnight to regroup before hosting Calder in Horsham for the first of three matches in the run to finals.Loader said July-August was traditionally a tough period for Rebels’ footballers and he hoped they would hit the field fresher and stronger when competition resumed. The Rebels remain one game clear in fourth spot.
