Eagles coach Ron Watt didn’t mince his words after the triumph.
“It was a bloody good win!,” he said.
“We played really strong team football. Everyone played their roles. They made a very strong commitment to how they wanted to play. And they did it.
“It was a pretty hard game...a fierce game.”
The Eagles came out of the blocks with purpose and poise. James Maher booted two goals and Mick Nolan and Brendan Sutcliffe chipped in singles in the first term.
And what a show young Adam Toohey put in, kicking seven majors for the day. Toohey started with a single in the second quarter then stamped his mark on the match with three more in the third and another trio in the last term.
The Cats launched strong attacks, but the Eagles’ defence blunted such forays with ease.
Gunnell brothers Mark and Luke were rock solid and had great backup from Taylem Wason, Jack Toohey, Brad Hallam and Zack Ryan.
The return of Zac May in the ruck eased the workload on Sutcliffe, who was the anchor player in the centre. May was rested most of the day, but was telling when he was on the field.
Newlyn’s Adam Sewell lined up after a spell with injury, but made little impression.
There were a few wounded Cats running around. Myles Sewell and Dylan McLachlan sported bandages for head injuries, but they kept going.
Young Josh Milne was outstanding in defence and Patrick Parr was a pest around the goals. Parr booted a pair, but scoreboard pressure was something that eluded the Cats.
Stephen Clifton, Dan Wehrung and Dan Wrigley pushed back as hard as they could against a ferocious Gordon side.
Newlyn joint-coach Chris Dwyer admitted the Cats were chasing the Eagles the whole match.
“We couldn’t score. Their defence was very, very good. But the boys kept trying,” Dwyer said.
“It was interesting that the inside 50s were just about even, but they just set up so well across their half back line.
“We couldn’t stop them when they got forward.”
While Newlyn’s year is now finished, Gordon must start preparing for a preliminary final showdown with Buninyong.
The Eagles will have confidence after beating the Bombers in the last round of the Central Highlands Football League home and away season.
