Pupils from the school’s newly-formed Mini Vinnie’s group organised a fundraising and donation day with all proceeds, and bucketloads of toiletry items such as soap and shampoo, going to the shower bus to support homeless people in Ballarat.
Children donated a gold coin to wear casual clothes and raise more than $400.
Deputy principal Julie Orr said pupils toured the shower bus, heard stories about the people who need it, and learned how it operated.
“This day was about not just talking about the homeless in Ballarat, but actually doing something for them and supporting a Ballarat initiative,” Ms Orr said.
“One of our teachings is compassion for others and to respond with compassion – it’s how we do it and here is an example of not just talk but taking action.”
The event was organised by two students who are part of the newly formed Mini Vinnies group who are working to increase awareness of social justice issues in the community.
