THE Newlyn Cricket Club will live on and move to the Ballarat Cricket Association after the league it was a part of folded.Newlyn will pair with Coronet City and compete in the BCA fifths competition. It is expected it will compete under the Coronet City-Newlyn banner this weekend.Until almost two weeks ago, Newlyn was one of four teams in the Daylesford and District Cricket Association. However the senior section of the league disbanded after Daylesford and Korweinguboora pulled their sides’ from the competition. The situation meant Newlyn players were left with nowhere to play cricket and the club was set to go into recess. Now offers from Coronet City and Brown Hill have given Newlyn hope of securing the club. After meetings with both clubs, Newlyn decided to pair with Coronet City.Newlyn president Craig Slater said the entire club was “absolutely rapt” and was excited at the prospect of playing in the BCA.Slater said it had provided a breath of fresh air into the club, which would have been impossible otherwise. He thanked the Brown Hill Cricket Club for also offering to take his side on board.“It has reinvigorated the club. If we were forced into recess for the rest of the season we might have struggled to get the club back up and running again,” Slater said. The players will compete in the fifth division, filling the gap left by Brown Hill which was forced to withdraw its side earlier this year. The Newlyn players will also be available for selection in higher divisions if they wish.Coronet City president David Thompson it would be a positive for both clubs.“We obviously want to increase numbers in the future and it is a perfect way to do that,” he said.“We want to keep that link with Newlyn and hopefully it is something that can continue into the future.”A DDCA meeting is scheduled to be held next year to assess whether the league will remain viable in the future.
