The secret recipe beat out competitors from all around Australia to be crowned the nation’s best.
But it wasn’t the only success for the niche bakery popular with visitors and locals alone, with the famed honey mustard and chicken pie also scoring the gold, while a bronze was awarded to the boutique lamb stew pie.
The Official Great Aussie Meat Pie Competition was established in 1989, and entrants, who send in four samples of each pie to be judged, are assessed on the thickness and texture of the pie, and the amount of filling the pie contains.
The pie then undergoes a blind taste test, and is tasted by two or three judges.
The judging panel consists of TAFE trainers, chefs, bakers and bakery representatives, all of whom are experts in their field.
Hope Bakery’s Head Baker Matt Beaston, as well as bakers Rohan Giblett and Steve Smartt said they were thrilled to accept the awards for their sausage roll and the two pies.
“Sovereign Hill plain sausage rolls are the real deal – a secret blend of fresh meat and vegetables encased in golden pastry, handmade and baked in a genuine wood-fired Scotch oven,” Mr Beaston said.
“They are one of the most popular items sold at the bakery – on a busy day, up to 250 are sold during peak periods.”
Ballarat locals can sample the sausage rolls by using a 15-minute shopper’s pass.
