Traffic problems
Last week we saw the opening of the new CVLX saleyards at Miners Rest, This was a moment that council and many others had been waiting for……but not all are happy. The first sale was scheduled for Friday 19th Oct…. unfortunately Thursday afternoon (18th Oct) saw seven cattle trucks go through Albert Street, right at school pick up/ home time. Albert Street provides the main access to and from our school and kindergarten for the 400 plus students and their parents. Albert St must also be crossed by students that walk or ride to attend our school. On Monday afternoon we saw a similar amount of stock truck traffic for the sheep sale scheduled for Tuesday.

One wonders why Ballarat City sees Auckland as an example to follow for a solution to our parking problems. Auckland is a very different city to Ballarat – The population of approximately 1.5 million is about 15 times that of Ballarat. The greater city is segmented by inlets from harbours on both sides and is quite hilly with many volcanic cones causing roadways to be steep and/or twisted around the terrain. Streets tend to be narrow – so that on-street angle parking is rare. There are several major shopping and industrial centres for employment – so the central city is not always the focus of travel. Even so the central city has numerous off-street parking stations which can take the bulk of parking.
But most of all the situation in Auckland is different to that in Ballarat because of the extensive and frequent bus and ferry services - with bus services advertised as being “at least every 15 minutes, 7am – 7pm, 7 days a week. Until Ballarat also has sensibly designed bus routes with frequent services we will continue to have problems with parking because people have no practical alternative to using their cars to reach the CBD.
