Since last weeks saleyard opening, residents have experienced numbers of stock vehicles rumbling through Miners Rest, diverting down Albert Street from the Ballarat-Maryborough Road as a short-cut to get to the saleyards as can be seen below.
“It was bad last week and it’s only gotten worse this week,” Alica Bond, president of the Committee for Miners Rest said.
“The whole process has been disgusting, we’ve never had a problem with the saleyards going in but we want our roads to be safe.”
Ms Bond has been fighting for the past four years for restrictions on truck routes travelling to the new saleyards.
While these vehicles have been advised Albert Street is not a through-road in Miners Rest, residents have reported trucks passing through at all times of the day.
City of Ballarat have confirmed that they will be erecting signs at the entrance to Miners Rest clearly identifying the saleyard truck route via the Sunraysia Highway.
This will also include a sign on Albert Street reading ‘No stock truck’.
The Learmonth-Sulky Road will also be identified as the cross connection to the Sunrasyia Highway for trucks coming from the north.
It will be a ‘wait and see’ situation for residents to see if these council measures will actually stop drivers from using Albert Street.
“Its been inappropriate planning from the start. No trucks should be coming through town, period.”
