Units from Ballarat City Fire Brigade were initially called out to the corner of Rodier and York Street just prior to 3am due to reports of a fire on the side of the road.
Once there firefighters discovered it was discarded furniture that someone had deliberately set on fire.
They were able to extinguish the blaze with only minimal damage coming to an NBN box the furniture was leaning up against.
Following that incident, Ballarat City joined units from Wendouree, Lucas and Sebastopol to assist in an industrial fire incident on the Ballarat-Carngham Road just after 4.30am.
A spokesperson from Ballarat City said the fire was caused by some equipment malfunctioning at a plastics factory.
Crews were able to have the blaze under control within about 25 minutes.
