Although they would probably not be missed if they vanished from the earth, mosquitoes provide services such as pollination, and food for numerous other creatures, including birds, spiders, fishes and more.
Swallows and fantails are just two groups of birds consuming numerous mosquitoes. Their larvae are also important foods for waterbirds, fishes and other creatures.
Not every species of mosquito bothers humans. Most mosquitoes feed on nectar, with relatively few needing the protein from mammal blood to form their eggs.
However, some scientists claim that they are not vital to the planet, and other insect species would take over their role if they disappeared.
