EARLIER: Saturday 1.15pm.
Police are appealing for information to a crash on Remembrance Drive early Saturday morning.
The road was closed for more than three hours after a Holden Ute hit a tree travelling west on Remembrance Drive between Powells Road and Weighbridge Road, near the Cardigan Lodge Motel, about 7.10am.
Moorabool Highway Patrol Sergeant Tony Creanor said police were keen to speak to anyone who may have seen or heard the crash.
The 19-year-old male driver was airlifted to Royal Melbourne Hospital, where he is in a critical condition with head injuries. He was the sole occupant in the car.
Sergeant Creanor said police were investigating the cause of the crash, but do not believe alcohol was a contributing factor.
Sergeant Creanor urged everyone to take care on the roads, particularly leading into the Christmas festive season.
“I ask everyone heed the speed limit and everyone considers safety messages about mobile phone use and seat belts,” Sergeant Creanor said.
“It’s also important everyone remembers to take breaks during road trips and, if you’re out drinking, to make sure you have a designated driver.”
This is the fourth serious incident along Remembrance Drive in as many months. Some residents have called for roundabouts along the road to force drivers to slow down.
City of Ballarat councillor Daniel Moloney, who is a member of the Arch of Victory/ Avenue of Honour Committee, has previously said any aesthetic changes to Remembrance Drive such as installing a roundabout would require careful consideration given plans to establish the 20km stretch as a nationally significant heritage site.
Anyone with dash cam footage is urged to call Ballarat Highway Patrol 53 389 200 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
