The Mermaid Sorority Makers Market will set up indoors at Ballarat Sports and Events Centre on Sunday, and while the launch coincides with the annual Springfest at Lake Wendouree, organisers were hopeful they could complement and add to what was on offer nearby.
Every stall will offer handmade or hand-designed products from fashion, jewellery and homewares to food. The Mermaid Sorority markets have a big focus on wellness and vegan offerings.
The market’s name stems from its bayside locations in the Mornington Peninsula and in Geelong and Torquay.
Organisers say Ballarat shoppers have long asked for The Mermaid Sorority to set up shop in Ballarat and, as shoppers were a key part of the sorority or market fabric, they felt it right to bring the market here.
About 30 per cent of stall holders are from the Ballarat region, a portion organisers hope to increase in a return without other markets in action about town.
Stalls will take up the two courts inside BSEC with food vans outside. Organisers are keen to explore expanding the market once the new wing development is complete.
The Mermaid Sorority market runs 9am-2pm.
