The horse pulled up lame after finishing an eye-catching eighth behind Galactic Star in a heat of the series at Melton on Saturday.
Harness Racing Victoria stewards tweeted regarding Shadow Sax after the race, revealing that an inspection of the horse revealed he was lame in the near hind leg and was subsequently stood down pending veterinary clearance.
Shadow Sax drew badly in gate 12 for Saturday night’s heat, and after sitting back in the field for much of the 2240m trip, flashed home down the outside to only be beaten 5.7m.
The Cardigan-based pacer is now rated a $13 chance to win the final with the TAB.
Fellow local hope It Is Billy was also vetted after finishing a long last in the first heat behind Spankem.
HRV stewards said the post-race examination revealed the horse to be lame in the near fore leg and to have an irregular heart beat. He was stood down pending veterinary clearance and an ECG report.
It Is Billy is trained by Daylesford’s Michael Barby.
In the trotting division of the Inter Dominion series, Michael Stanley-trained Sky Petite finished sixth in her heat behind Tornado Valley.
The second round of heats will be run in Ballarat on Tuesday night before the third round at Cranbourne on Saturday evening. The finals are booked for Melton on December 15.
