A rainbow encircled the sun, with a second very faint rainbow offering a concentric view in the sky.
Weather bureau senior forecaster Dean Stewart said the sun halo, also known as iridescence, occurred several times a year when there is high, thin cloud.
“It’s caused by refraction of the sun’s light shining through a thin layer of ice particles in very high, very thin cirrus cloud,” he said.
“Looking at it from below you get a ring.”
