There were people waiting for the doors to officially open on Tuesday morning, with young and old flocking inside, according to team leader Sally Pitman.
“There were people waving from their cars when I went to open the doors,” she said.
“There’s been lots of kids in this morning, the youngest person in today is 12 days old, and there’s also some of our older ones, who are in their 90s – they’re coming in asking where everything is, because everything’s changed, so there’s been some lovely discovery tours.”
The library’s been closed for renovations for more than a year, and Ms Pitman added she had been looking forward to seeing the jaw-dropping reactions.
Paris Tomlinson, who has just moved to Sebastopol, was reading to her two children.
“It’s awesome, the kids area is so good – we’re walking distance, so we’re hoping to utilise it a lot,” she said.
Diane Knight, a librarian from Cervantes in Western Australia, said she had visited the old library, and was very impressed with the renovation.
“I have a little room, because it’s a tiny town of 300 people, and this is marvellous,” she said, beaming.
As well as public computers and self-checkouts, the library also features a teenager zone and space for a tea or coffee.
Work on the new outdoor areas is still being finished, but the Maternal and Child Health Centre is already up and running.
Junior reading programs and technology sessions will begin in February.
