The Anton Golino-trained Dance Craze ($17.70) used her trademark finishing speed to come from last and five deep on the home turn to run down New Zealand visitor Temporale ($21.40). Burrumbeet mare Skye Petite ($12.40) ran another big race to get third.
NZ master reinsman Mark Purdon took the winning drive – the first time he had had the reins on the 5yo.
Despite having an outstanding record, Dance Craze was given little chance of overcoming her rivals from her starting gate outside the second row.
Not even the dramatic scratching of short-priced favourite and Inter Dominion champion Tornado Valley was considered to improve her chances, but Purdon’s patience to sit back and wait worked to perfection.
Golino described taking out Australia’s richest trotting feature as a “dream come true”.
Danze Craze now bosts 15 wins in 24 starts for more than $300,000 in earnings.
EMMA Stewart, who trains on a neighbouring property to Golino at Cardigan, bounced back from the disappointment of missing out in the Victoria Derby by triumphing with Poster Boy ($3.90) in the group 1 4yo Bonanza, 1720m.
The run locks in a start in the rick Chariots of Fire in Sydney. Poster Boy was first-up since August.
Ballarat Pacing Cup runner-up Rackemup Tigerpie was a late scratching.
