Since September, more than 160,000 tonnes of asphalt has been used on roads throughout Victoria, with the work expected to continue until at least May with weather conditions expected to remain favourable.
In Ballarat on Monday to inspect the works underway on Norman Street, Wendouree, Roads Minister Jaala Pulford said in the four months, Regional Roads Victoria had been operational as a government department, more than 600km of road had already been relayed, with another 700km still to go.
“That’s the distance from Geelong to Echuca and back again and there’s still more work to be done,” she said. “Regional communities rely on our roads which is why we’ve doubled road maintenance spending since coming to office.
“I guess our message to drivers and other road users is to watch out for the road crews, you’ll see them just about everywhere you go, slow down where you need to and take care where’s there’s changed conditions.”
Chief Officer Regional Roads Victoria Paul Northey said once the Norman Street works were completed, Ballarat motorists would see changes to Howitt Street between Forest Street and Gillies Street.
He said these works would predominantly be completed at night, but drivers were being asked to make sure they take extra care along the busy stretch of road.
