He took out the event in 2011 – edging out Ballarat’s Joel Bee.
Only Luke Stevens, 2.75m, has been given a tighter mark for the rich sprint at the City Oval on Saturday and Sunday.
The 28-year-old McCabe represented Australia in the 4x100m relay in the 2012 London Olympic Games.
He also competed at the world championships in 2013 – two years after finishing third in the Stawell Gift.
Stevens will go into the $8100 event at the City Oval as one of the form runners.
He is fresh from winning the Parkdale Gift, having started the year with victory in a 200m at Maryborough.
The 2014 Ballarat Gift winner Nathan Riali (3m), Matt Carter (3.25m and 2016 Stawell Gift winner Isaac Dunmall (3.5m) are among other backmarkers in the 66 entries.
Dunmall latest successes include a win in the 70m at Bay Sheffield in Adelaide.
Although each faces a tough assignment in the 120m heats on Saturday ahead of Sunday’s semi-finals and final, all are among favourites to collect the new $500 prize being offered to the quickest performer in the heats.
Last year’s Ballarat Gift winner Luke Mitchell has been handicapped on 9.75m
