The superload, which is just about the same size of an Airbus A380, is carrying a transformer for use at the Murra Warra Windfarm. It is due to leave Glen Waverley at 11pm on Sunday night and arrive at Melton about 5am Monday morning.
When complete, the windfarm will have a capacity of 226MW, consisting of 61 turbines that will produce enough clean electricity to power 220,000 homes.
It will spend the day at Melton before embarking on the next phase of its trip to Bungaree late on Monday night. It will stop for around about three hours then leave Bungaree around 7am with an aim to arrive at Murra Warra by 4pm Tuesday.
A VicRoads spokesperson said due to the size and weight, delays along the freeway are likely, with the load only travelling around 15-20km/h throughout the duration of the trip.
“VicRoads crews will be helping move the superload by assisting it to get safely around corners, temporarily removing signage and lights, ensuring steel supports are placed over existing drainage and then putting everything back in place,” the spokesperson said.
“It’ll be all lights green along its path and because of its size we will be closing sections of major roads and freeways as it passes through.
“So, if you’re travelling during this time, plan ahead and allow more time.”
It is the second superload to pass through the western district in less than two months after the successful transportation of a 633-tonne load from Geelong to Lismore in January.
