SARAH Shepherd could be just the weapon Ballarat & Clarendon College needs to claim the boys' Head of the Lake crown at Nagambie on Saturday.
The year 12 was assigned the rare mission to cox the boys' firsts this season.
College believes it may be the first time in Head of the Lake history for a girl to assume the position.
She was given the task after the college struggled to find a boy cox with enough experience to take the helm.
Shepherd was humbled to be given a chance in the prestigious role after coxing the girls' thirds last season.
"I am pretty honoured," Shepherd said.
"Just being in the firsts is a privilege, it's the epitome of rowing.
"To be making history with the boys - people keep coming up to me at school and telling me I'm a part of history - I'm just pumped."
Rowing under Shepherd's direction are fellow year 12s Tom Liubinas, Nick Schomburgk, Clay Trembath and boys' captain of boats Sandy Stewart.
Shepherd said her crew had been supportive of her role, on and off the water, and were "pretty good" when it came to following her instructions.
"They've been really good about it," Shepherd said.
"I think they just realised they had no-one else experienced enough to cox them.
"They're a pretty top crew and it's such a great opportunity."
She was also confident they could put on a good show for boat race.
"We're constantly improving," Shepherd said.
"We're still training hard. It's the last season for all of us.
"We'd definitely like to finish it off on a high."
