Former Bachelorette Georgia Love and partner Lee Elliot discovered this firsthand when they moved in together at their new home in Melbourne, having to work hard to find their own style by combining and compromising on their individual styles, urban modern and Scandinavian.
Online furniture and homewares store Zanui helped the couple find the right mix and create a united space, together with stylist Fiona Michelon.
“Moving in together with your partner can be tricky with many aspects to consider, including blending two styles to create your own unique look as a couple and the dreaded compromises that come with having to choose which pieces to keep,” she says. “When Georgia and Lee moved in together, some areas felt mismatched but luckily they both liked a similar design style of modern urban mixed with Scandinavian which also suited their new home perfectly and was easy to combine.”
Fiona says there’s no hard and fast rule about having to stick to one trend or style, as you can often find a smart way to mix two different styles as long as they cohesively complement the space. “I actually find that often blending trends is what makes a space feel unique and homely, so try and think outside the box when merging your furniture,” she says.
Fiona styled Georgia and Lee’s bed with pops of soft blush and navy, to tie into the artwork which is a colour combination that’s calming, feminine and on trend. “This reflects Georgia’s preferred Scandinavian look, but with the hints of grey and timber it keeps it from being overly girly for Lee and follows the urban modern trend.
“I think that having this challenge is also a great opportunity to look at your usual style with fresh eyes, and perhaps push it into a different direction all together. I recommend jumping on sites like Pinterest to discover what you both love and loathe, that way you are on the same page when you start to tackle your new home together.”
