Police can confirm that the item was not an explosive device and that trains have resumed running.

Ballarat V/Line services have been disrupted after a suspicious object was found just before 4.30pm.

Police confirmed they are conducting a safety check at Footscray station, with the Bomb Response Unit to arrive at the scene shortly.

The area around the station has been cordoned off as a precaution.

The object was found unattended outside the station just before 4.30pm.

A major disruption notice has been posted on Twitter.

The delays will affect commuters on peak hour trains on the Ballarat, Bendigo, and Geelong lines.

V/Line has been contacted for comment.
