The stolen car fire was reported just before 1am on Wallaby Track, near Greene Drive in Mount Pleasant. Nearby residents reported hearing an "explosion" from the car fire in the early hours of the morning.
The car was dumped on the property of Central Highlands Water (CHW), near its water treatment plant. The Courier understands this is not the first car which has been dumped on CHW land.
Ballarat City Fire Station senior officer Shane Phillips said the burnt out car was in an "awkward spot" for fire crews to get to, as it was on densely-wooded Central Highlands Water land, with entrances to the track fenced off.
He said when crews arrived, the fire had not affected any surrounding bush land.
"Central Highlands Water (CHW) can confirm that an abandoned vehicle was found on CHW property early this morning," a spokesperson for the water body said.
"There has been no apparent damage to CHW property or assets and the relevant authorities, the CFA and Police are investigating."
Tuesday morning's arson event was not far from where another car fire - apparently caused by a car rollover - spread to a plantation between Magpie and Mount Clear.
The March 24 fire burnt out a sector of the pine plantation on Frenchmans Lane about eight hundred metres north east of the Magpie Primary School.
